So you’re from Brazil, how was that growing up?
Good, I grew up 2 hrs. from the beach but my dad loved the ocean so he built a beach house in Florianopolis.  Every weekend we would go to the beach and my dad would scuba, fish and sail.  I would get to go surfing there every weekend.

You came to know Christ in the US, how did that happen?
The doors in Brazil were closing for myself and my wife. We were disappointed with the economy, but my friend had a sister in the US and told us to go there.  So we got a one year visa and came to live with my friend’s sister.  Before we left my friend warned us that they were crazy Christians!  45 days after talking to him we were in America.  2 months later we accepted Christ because of the love we felt and were shown by our Christian hosts.  We went on an encounter with our church and accepted Christ there!

Short history of the chapter?
Dan Cotton started it with some other people four or five years ago.  They did beach clean ups, had a surf week and because of the heart they had for people they grew!  Free surf lessons is a great outreach!

Some famous Jersey surfers?
Rob Kelly, Dean Randazzo and more all the time...

What does Manasquan bring to the CSUS table?
They have older people who are really committed to God, more older than younger.  And the free surf lessons in the summer.  They are the only people reaching surfers specifically in the area.  That is what is so cool about CS, no one else was reaching out to the surfers there before Christian Surfers.

Favorite thing about Jersey surfers?
They are really kind and share waves.  People talk in the water, no problem, just surf and have fun.  You’ll see a lot of families at the beach, grandfather with board, grandma, dads, moms all coming down together to have fun in the water and play!

What motivates you to volunteer as a chapter director?
I didn’t volunteer! Dan (Cotton) was leaving to Panama and we were close, surfed everyday and had dinner together all the time.  I was on the core leader team and being involved in CS was a dream for me. To get to hang out with a group of surfers that loved God!  I got involved originally because of that.  What ended up happening was that Dan had everyone in the chapter vote on who the next chapter director should be and everyone voted for me!

Favorite boards?
I have three boards, a JC 6’1, and the other 2 are UM (Uncle Mike), 5’10 and the other a is 5’6.

Water temp range in New Jersey?
40 degrees in winter to high 60s in the summer.

Water temp where you’re from?
Winter is about 60 degrees and then summer is around 75, really nice!

Favorite time of year to be a surfer in Jersey?
Spring time b/c the winter is so long.  The colors come back in the spring along with the sun. We also get fun consistent swells in the spring.

Final Words?
I have been doing the translations for the devotional every week into Portuguese.  It has been a blessing and a great place for surfers to open their minds and see what God has for them.  It helps Christian surfers to turn from trying to fulfill themselves to finding fulfillment in God and to follow God's plan for reaching out to surfers.  A lot of surfers are looking for this outlet to share God’s love with others and that is why God is using CS!
