Christian Surfers Huntington Beach

HB, home of the surf industry, how is it living in Huntington?
Iove lived here now for 16 years and love it, it’s an awesome place to live!  Before that I was in Mammoth for 3 years and I definitely like it here better.

Short history of the chapter, your history with the chapter?
We started almost four years ago.  There had been a chapter here before but we were a totally new chapter start.  I was the youth leader at First Christian Church at the time and Jerry Lathrop came up to me and asked about starting a surf club at the church.  I was more interested in outreach and went on google searching for pro surfer speaker. Bryan Jennings popped up and Christian Surfers right after that. The website was great and I hadn’t seen anything like it before!

The next day I called the National Office and the office staff member asked if I knew Stan Bryson.  Unbeknowst to me, Stan had called in a half an hour before interested starting a chapter! Once Stan and I connected we visited a Newport Beach chapter meeting and loved it!  We had food and a great Bible study and it felt like family.  We looked at each other and knew that this was what a chapter should be like.
When we were starting it we were all in awe, this was the closest thing to a divine appointment any of us had ever experienced.  We just had the chills, feeling that God was directly putting the pieces in place and we were just there to obey and carry out His plans.

Best day surfing at the pier?
The best day was actually at the Cliffs right around when the chapter started.  Because I got involved with drugs and alcohol when I was younger, I lost a lot of surfing time until around when I turned 35.  When I came back to the water and the Lord it made the whole experience of surfing that much more meaningful.
This was a special day, summertime, warm water, boardshorts, I felt really loose and surfing with a good friend.  My friend surfed for 2 hours and went in and I stayed out for another 2 hours.  48 years young, everything was right, feeling like a kid again!

Some famous HB surfers?
Brett Simpson, Corky Carroll, Jeff Deffenbaugh, Timmy Turner, Ryan Turner, Nate Yeomans, and Timmy Reyes.

What does HB bring to the CSUS table?
The HB chapter is unique because of the area.  We are in the hub of the surfing industry. When you talk about the surfing industry, boards, shapers and location this all allows us to partner up and work with all these guys. HSS, JC, Surf Prescriptions, Jack’s, Sambazon and many more all support us.  This in turns helps us to do larger outreaches, movie premieres and to reach out to the world’s largest surf contest, the US Open.

This is a central location for not only coastal surfers but inland guys as well from Riverside and all over the Inland Empire.  They come to us!

What motivates you to volunteer as a chapter director?
Being in the water and being involved in God’s work.

Favorite boards?
Right now, a John Carper shaped 6’4 flying fish is my favorite.  I had planned to shape it myself and after staring at the blank in my garage for 2 years John said, Why don’t I just throw that on the machine for you? I call it the Tugboat!

Water temp range in HB?
50-70, winter to summer

Favorite time of year to be a surfer in HB?
All the time, because winter has good waves but all the seasons are all so beautiful.  The days you’re not surfing you can be walking the beach praising God.

Final Words?
I want to plug the US Open outreach this year, it is going to be great! The last 2 or 3 yrs. we have handed out 20,000 to 30,000 WOW DVD’s at the Open.

This year it is more an opportunity for people to do mission work in their local area.  The CS booth now is going to be set up as a VIP booth for pros and industry people.  There will be a live shaper's bay and the shapers will be able to proclaim Jesus and their testimony from the shaping bay.  We will have teams of people to pray over the grounds before, during and after, as well as setting up for beach cleanup and teardown.  There will be a premiere with the Joey Buran movie Beyond the Dream and a Q and A with Joey Buran.  There will be much, much more coming, see below for contact info. We are taking applications for 300 volunteers to reach out at the US Open, July 18-26, 2009.

At the same time we are also getting ready for ASR, focusing on serving the vendors with set up and breakdown and anything else they need!
